For fanden skyld! My crisp Scandinavian jumper has a hole in it. A massive Forbrydelsen shaped hole in my Sarah Lund jumper. Yours too? Thought so. This is my round about way of saying ‘what am I gonna do now The Killing is over?!’
Well it’s fine!!! Because BBC4 has done it again – with BORGEN – Denmark’s new political drama based on all the Machiavellian goings on surrounding an election. It’s kinda like the West Wing but with better knitwear.
Moody shots of Copenhagen? Check. Fast political action? Check. Sarah Lund. Errr No. But it does have a whole sborgensboard (does this work?)of faces from the Killing.
Borgen also reminds me of the Deal, the Steven Frears TV series of how Tony outmaneuvered Gordon to become Prime Minister (It doesn’t mention the shit they got us into now). It’s about power and how people get it and all the people that surround them – spin doctors, journalists, yeaaah.
It’s the same Killing team so we have a strong female central character in Birgitte Nyborg Christensen (Sidse Babett Knudsen) but she is no Lund, happily married and no way near as fucked up.
And in a case of art imitating life Borgen follows on the fictional election of Birgitte Nyborg Christensen (Sidse Babett Knudsen) as prime minister and Denmark recently got its first female PM to Helle Thorning-Schmidt. Skol.
Oh! And if you prefer something with a higher body count then BBC4 is bringing us The Bridge – a Danish/Swedish co-production about the discovery of a body on the Bridge that links the two countries. Yeooooow!
Borgen is on Saturday at 9 BBC4.
