Besides my dear pal Bella Vita on Broadway Market and Ombra on Cambridge Heath Road, I’ve been struggling to find a reliable local Italian around Hackney. But more than that, one that serves a decent lobster linguine…
Where: 237 Mile End Road, E1
What’s it like? Classic meets contemporary, great mood lighting, good soft bread
Food: Unlike Bella Vita, they don’t do every single Italian dish under the sun. It’s a smaller selection and pretty special without being too pricey either. It’s worth noting they make all their pasta from scratch here and offer starter portions of all the dishes which I always think is a touch because it means you can be a gluttonous pig and try, well, everything.
Highlights were the Parpadelle with braised rabbit ragu (a few bones but nothing to worry about), the Tris di tortelli, which is a selection of 3 tortelli filled with walnuts and mascarpone, spinach and ricotta and pumpkin in a butter sauce – and of course the lobster tagliatelle (*this was on the specials so might not be there all the time, even though it definitely should).
